  1. In my opinion, “Sweet Music” is a wonderful African-American spiritual (although, I would suspect not many people are familiar with it) and it is the perfect compliment to the fanfare of Easter music in our churches. Unlike the many verses and the expected trumpets blasts of hymns traditionally sung at Easter, the beauty of this spiritual lies in the uplifting directness and simplicity of lyrics, as well as, a softer, yet moving, presentation. A few years ago I attended a service that performed this spiritual with bells and fell in love with it. I also heard it sung by a fairly small choral group that delivered it a capella. I loved them both. It is pleasing to see this piece included at our Easter celebration at St. M. M. After all, we do not only find our God in the blast of trumpets and brilliant sunsets, but also in the simplicity and ordinariness of our messy every day lives. I am also fond of Janet Vogt’s “Rise Up With Him”. Is the brass section listed the band that Kim plays with?
